After scientific and systematic training and practice, simultaneous translators should master certain translation and broadcasting skills. Besides providing information to the audience quickly and well, they should also master some working etiquette. Now, the translation company will introduce what working etiquette they need to have.
1.守時(shí)
1. Punctuality
Simultaneous interpreters need to arrive not only on time but also in advance. Usually, he has to sit in the work box 15 minutes before the meeting starts. During this time, he can check the equipment in the box to see if there is any change in the meeting process, if there is any new meeting document, etc. In case of any change in the arrangement or location of the meeting, it can be dealt with in a timely manner.
2. Team spirit
It has been said that an interpreter who cannot be a good colleague will not be a good interpreter. That's right. If translators get along well with each other, the whole team will do a great job. Usually a simultaneous interpreting task is undertaken by two interpreters in turn. Therefore, the evaluation of interpretation work is to evaluate the whole team rather than individuals, so team spirit is very important. Translators should help each other and support each other. When one of them encounters difficulties in translation, the other should give selfless help. If it is an experienced translator and a new partner, the former should try to make the latter feel relaxed, while the latter should focus on their work instead of being distracted by the idea of making a good impression. When the interpreter is resting, don't leave the box for a long time, and don't enter the box at the last minute before taking over the microphone. When the interpreter is resting, if someone enters the box and wants to chat, he should be firm and polite. If your partner just comes back from leaving the box, don't give him the microphone right away. Instead, give him some time to understand what he is talking about. You can write down the progress of the topic and some special terms used by the speaker for his reference. If there is another team to take over your work, you should leave a note in the box telling them to discuss the progress and the necessary documents for the next step.
3. Respect for speakers
If a speaker has to use a language other than his usual working language to convey his message more clearly, the interpreter cannot change the focus of his speech or reveal his views on the topic in tone. The job of an interpreter is to convey what the speaker wants to say. So try to be as faithful, accurate, fluent and natural as possible. If the speaker uses simple and plain words, the interpreter cannot use profound and obscure words.
4. Respect the audience
Translators and audiences should form a partnership. The interpreter must speak clearly when quoting figures, and if possible twice. If the audience still looks confused, say that number again. Ask the audience for help when distributing documents or when the microphone fails. The interpreter should pay close attention to the response of the audience. If the speaker speaks too fast, the interpreter wants him to slow down. Ask the audience for help. The interpreter can say: "we regret that we can't translate accurately because the speaker's speaking speed is so fast. In order to let you hear clearly, please ask Mr. chairman to let the speaker slow down.". It's very effective to calmly ask for help through the microphone. When the speaker's microphone fails, the interpreter should inform the audience through his / her own microphone, so that the audience can understand that the interruption of interpretation is not the responsibility of the interpreter. If the speaker is too far away from the microphone for the interpreter to hear clearly, then the interpreter should not translate, because the interpreter is responsible for conveying accurate information. If inaccurate information is conveyed, it is the responsibility of the interpreter. Any explanation is in vain.
5. Respect for meeting organizers and staff
Translators should first keep the documents in order. At the end of the meeting, the interpreter should take the time to arrange the documents in order again. If the organizer of the meeting requests to return the documents after the meeting, he must return them in time. Introduce yourself to the technician before the meeting. If the interpreter has any comments on the equipment, it can be politely put forward through the team leader. After the meeting, don't forget to thank and say goodbye to the meeting staff.
6. Use microphone correctly
Before the first stage of the meeting, the interpreter should check whether the microphone is normal, how to change the channel, whether the earphone is comfortable and whether the sound is suitable. When entering the box in the middle of the meeting, the interpreter should make sure that the microphone is closed, otherwise the audience will hear the private conversation between the interpreters. A professional translator should only turn on the microphone when he / she speaks instead of turning it on in advance. Turn off the microphone when you finish translating. If there is a big difference between the two interpreters, the speaker will adjust the volume. What an interpreter should do is to keep the same distance from the microphone. Don't shake your head when interpreting. Don't shuffle the paper, pour water or knock on the table.
7. Taboo
No smoking in the work box. At the same time, the interpreter should not put on very strong perfume, because smoke and fragrance will make people dizzy in narrow boxes. Don't manicure your nails in the box, read the newspaper and eat snacks in front of the public, which will disturb the audience's attention. The phone must be turned off. Don't forget to turn off the microphone when you need to sneeze and cough.
